We start our tour at Hanoi’s most exiting covered market- Chợ Hôm. Along the perimeter of the market, dozens of street hawkers sell a staggering variety of produces from live seafood to exotic fruits, different kinds of meats, fruit candies and spices. Your expert English-speaking local guide will give you an insight of Vietnamese food culture and details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular northern dishes. We eat as we go, trying seasonal fruits like durian, jack-fruit, dragon, longan… which are local typical and sampling a tasty sweet fruit candies as snack from a street cart.
Next, walk to the nearby Hương Liên bun cha restaurant addressed at 24 Le Van Huu Street. The fact that attracted Obama and Bourdain at their dinner comes from the clouds of meaty smoke by grilling small patties of seasoned pork and slices of marinated pork belly over a charcoal fire, a fish sauce-heavy broth, a basket of herbs and a helping of rice noodles. All of these made the street side restaurant become the best and it shouldn’t be missed.
Dining here al fresco will let you get a glimpse of the local eating culture. Sharing meals with friends and loved ones is pretty much embedded in the Vietnamese way of life. And restaurants like Xôi Yến is one of the best places to experience that.
Continue the ride to the St. Joseph's Cathedral then hop off. Located in Nha Tho Street, this city landmark began its construction in 1886, with the architectural style described as resembling Notre Dame de Paris. The church was one of the first structures built by the French colonial government in Indochina when it opened in December 1886. It is the oldest church in Hanoi. From here you’ll walk through the maze of bustling streets that make up Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The first stop is Quán Gốc Đa @ 82 in Ly Quoc Su Str. This 45 year- old family restaurant is now run by the third generation. It’s always crowded here as this is the address where the locals come eating fresh vegetarian spring rolls, dim sum, pillow cake( bánh gối),… Take a stool and be a part with the local company to enjoy the hot dishes in this street eatery with us!
Proceed further to the next Pho HTX restaurant @ 10 Ly Quoc Su. This trademark has been famous since the subsidy economic time and always crowded by the local gourmets. Pho- Vietnamese rice noodle soup can be eaten at any time of day. However, it takes long to prepare the best bowel. First, they need to prepare the broth a day ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator. The quality of Pho depends very much on this. The broth is normally cooked by marrow bones and beef chuck and a good pho broth needs to be clear, not muddy and dark, certainly fragrant of beef, anise and ginger. You can serve this soup with several toppings. To use broth that has been made in advance, bring it to a boil, then add fresh ginger to refresh it. Come serving time, they cook the noodles and assemble the bowls. Make sure that the hot soup is good soup.
Hanoi is a mixture of the Chinese& French influences. Apart from its architecture, this can be easily realized at the bread shops. Bánh Mỳ Nguyên Sinh @ 17 Ly Quoc Su is where our guide will take you next. Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets, a hidden café to drink Egg Coffee .This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the city that still serves egg coffee, a scrumptious local delicacy that we will sample whilst admiring the hustle and bustle of the city centre below. Or, if coffee is not your style, a cold beer awaits! At the end of the trip you are free to continue exploring the area or your guide will assist you back to your hotel.
